The American Benevolent Society delivered 5,035 services to 1,460 people during 2024, according to the annual report which we provided to the Junta de Asistencia Privada (JAP), the arm of the Mexico City government that accredits and supervises non-profit organizations (I.A.P.).
The number of services provided in 2024 represent a significant increase compared with recent years.
Leading the way in the number of services was the category “welfare checks and calls.” A total of 1,407 contacts were made with 41 people under the care of the ABS.
Under the reporting requirements of the JAP, the ABS must meticulously register each “service” provided to an individual. For example, if a person attends three ABS events (social activities), three services are reported.
In 2024, 274 people attended an average of four social activities, leading to 1,158 services.
The ABS provided recurring and sporadic economic aid to 67 people, accounting for 712 services. Another 352 people received health care and vaccinations, making up 725 services.
As a non-partisan, secular, non-profit the ABS is self-sustaining with the majority of our revenues coming from sales and fees derived by the American Cemetery (Panteón Americano) which we own. We provided 586 funeral services in 2024.
What is the Junta de Asistencia Privada (JAP)?
The JAP provides confidence to the public that non-profit organizations fulfill their missions by monitoring the use of assets and adherence to the laws governing non-profit organizations (La Ley de Instituciones de Asistencia Privada). https://www.congresocdmx.gob.mx/media/documentos/f980a169b5b94beff221f5aa234d23175d41c037.pdf
What is an I.A.P.?
They are the only organizations with social purposes fully supervised by an authority, which translates into greater certainty regarding compliance with their stated purpose, the regulations that apply to them, the proper use of resources, and the quality of the service they provide to vulnerable populations. Roughly speaking an I.A.P. would be known under US tax law as a 501(c)3.
Founded in 1868, the American Benevolent Society is one of the oldest I.A.P.s in Mexico City.
