Register to vote and request an absentee ballot ASAP

With just one form you can register to vote AND request your absentee ballot. It's called the Federal Post Card Application (FPCA), and it's recognized in all states and territories.

ACT EARLY: In most states you can return the FPCA electronically by email or fax. If you don't have a fax machine you can email your FPCA to fax@fvap.gov and they will fax it for you.

Absentee ballot request forms (FPCAs) must be printed and mailed in some states. If you are registering to vote for the first time, you may also need to print and mail your FPCA.

For the most up-to-date information about your state or county go to fvap.gov.

If you must mail your FPCA, you can drop it off at the US Embassy, Presa Angostura 225, Colonia Irrigación (Polanco area). Or give The ABS a call to see if we can help 55 5540 5123.

You can find postage-paid envelopes at FVAP. Use a glue stick to adhere the postage to your own envelope. No staples or adhesive tape.

Returning your ballot

When you receive your ballot, complete and return it IMMEDIATELY. Law requires that the ballot be ready 45 days before the election. If  you haven't received your ballot, contact your local election official as soon as possible.

You must print and mail your completed ballot in many states. Check out the options in your state here. Just click on your state in the map.

DUE TO MAIL DELAYS AND NEW POSTMARK RULES YOU SHOULD MAIL YOUR BALLOT IMMEDIATELY UPON RECEIPT.

In mail-in states you have several choices:

1. Drop your completed ballot at the US Embassy. Pre-paid postage available here

2.  Ship it by overnight carrier such as UPS, FedEx, or DHL. Do not rely upon the Mexican postal system

3. Contact The ABS to see how we can help.

Problem solving

The Federal Voting Assistance Program found that 99% of all overseas ballots that were returned were counted. The closer to Election Day that a ballot is received, the more likely it is to be rejected.

Problems
Step 1: Contact your local election office (LEO)

In our experience most problems are minor and easy to resolve. Most LEOs we have contacted are eager to resolve issues.

If your LEO is unhelpful, go to Step 2

Remember, you can always ask The ABS for assistance.
